Turn a CSV or Excel word list into an Anki deck
Have your words in a spreadsheet? Choose which column goes on the front and which on the back, and download a deck Anki opens with a double click.
A spreadsheet with one word per row: CSV, TSV, TXT, Excel (.xlsx) or OpenDocument (.ods).
- Nothing is uploaded
- No sign-up
- Free
How to use it
Choose a .csv, .tsv, .txt, .xlsx or .ods file, or paste rows copied from a spreadsheet.
Pick the front and back columns. A header row is recognised and skipped.
Name the deck and download the .apkg. Double-click it and Anki imports it.
Good to know
- No card limit. Decks with tens of thousands of rows work.
- Old CSV files saved in Windows or Mac encodings are read with the right accents.
- Importing the same deck again updates the cards instead of making duplicates.
From spreadsheet to card
A header row is recognised and skipped. You pick which column is the front and which the back; other columns are ignored.
Word,Meaning,Example
manzana,apple,Una manzana roja
perro,dog,El perro ladra
becomes two Anki cards
Front: manzana Back: apple
Front: perro Back: dogThe deck uses a simple Front and Back note type, so it works with every Anki add-on and on every device.
Questions
Why not use Anki's own CSV import?
You can, but it asks about separators, note types and field mapping, and gets accents wrong in older files. Here you see the cards before downloading and get one file that just opens.
Which Anki versions open the deck?
All current ones: Anki on Windows, Mac and Linux, AnkiDroid and AnkiMobile.
Can I convert Excel to Anki?
Yes. Drop the .xlsx or .ods file directly; if it has several sheets, pick the one you want.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by your browser on your own device and never sent to a server. Once the page has loaded it even works offline.
