Kindle Vocabulary Builder to Anki or CSV

Turn the words you looked up on your Kindle into an Anki deck or a spreadsheet, with the sentence from the book and the book title. Free, in your browser, no upload.

Drop your vocab.db here

Plug the Kindle into a computer and open the system/vocabulary folder (it may be hidden). The file is called vocab.db.

Stays on your computer. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Plug the Kindle into your computer with its USB cable. It shows up as a drive.

  2. Open the folder system/vocabulary on the Kindle. On a Mac press Cmd+Shift+. in Finder to show hidden folders; on Windows turn on hidden items in the View menu.

  3. Drop the file vocab.db on this page. Pick a language or books if you want, then download the Anki deck or the CSV.

Questions

Where is the Kindle vocab.db file?

On the Kindle itself, in the hidden folder system/vocabulary. Plug the Kindle into a computer and show hidden files (Cmd+Shift+. on a Mac) to see it. Kindle apps on phones and tablets do not keep this file.

Does the export include translations?

No. The Kindle stores the word, its base form, the sentence it was in and the book, but not a translation. The Anki deck has the sentence on the back. A Fluent by Accident account translates every word for you on import.

Can I export only one book or one language?

Yes. Once the file is read you can pick a language and untick books. The download has only the words you selected.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read by your browser on your computer. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works offline once the page is open.

Which Anki versions open the deck?

All of them: Anki on Windows, Mac and Linux, AnkiDroid and AnkiMobile. Double-click the .apkg file or choose File, Import in Anki.
